We need to take action
We need radical ideas to make radical change - which is what is needed in order to address climate change. Unfortunately, the calls for action over the last couple of decades have largely been ignored, and we've now reached a point that we can no longer choose to ignore the effects of our changing climate. I don't think we can reverse some of the effects, but we can make changes to help adapt and prevent further climate crises.
Declaring a climate emergency is a first step at identifying climate change as a priority issue, but it needs to have substance and actual actions behind it -- such as adding climate effects to council risk registers, making a financial commitment to sustainable behaviours, particularly around supporting local and circular materials, developing and promoting a sharing economy, and adapting infrastructure so we can better rely on active and public transport.
Why the contribution is important
We need strong, real government action and support - at all levels from local, national to international as addressing climate change can only happen on a collective level.
